Choosing the right point-of-sale system is one of the most important technology decisions a restaurant owner makes. The wrong system means slow service, frustrated staff, and missed revenue. The right system streamlines operations, reduces errors, and gives you the data you need to run a better business. Having worked with restaurants across Utah on POS system setups and transitions, we have seen firsthand what works — and what does not.
What Makes a Restaurant POS Different
A restaurant POS has fundamentally different requirements than a retail POS. It needs to handle table management, course firing, split checks, tip adjustments, kitchen display systems (KDS), online ordering integration, and labor management — all simultaneously during a dinner rush. The hardware needs to be durable, the software needs to be intuitive enough for high-turnover staff to learn quickly, and the support needs to be available when something goes wrong at 7 PM on a Friday.
SkyTab POS by Shift4
SkyTab is our top recommendation for most Utah restaurants, and it is the system we install and support locally. Built by Shift4 Payments, SkyTab is a purpose-built restaurant platform that includes tableside ordering and payment, online ordering, loyalty programs, labor management, and a cloud-based back office — all for $29.99 per workstation per month. That fee includes hardware, software, installation, training, and ongoing support.
SkyTab's mobile handheld units allow servers to take orders and process payments tableside, which reduces ticket times and increases table turns. The system integrates directly with Shift4's payment processing, which means your POS and payment data are unified in one platform. For bars, SkyTab handles tabs, pre-authorizations, and split bills natively. For multi-location operations, the cloud-based reporting gives owners a real-time view across all locations from a single dashboard.
The system was formerly known as HarborTouch POS before Shift4 acquired and rebranded it. The platform has been substantially rebuilt and expanded since then, and it now competes directly with Toast and Clover at a significantly lower price point.
Toast POS
Toast is one of the most widely recognized restaurant POS brands in the country, and for good reason — it is a comprehensive, restaurant-specific platform with a deep feature set. Toast includes table management, kitchen display systems, online ordering, gift cards, payroll integration, and a robust reporting suite.
The challenge with Toast is cost. Hardware is proprietary (you cannot use non-Toast devices), and the pricing model has become more expensive in recent years. The Starter Kit begins at $0/month with a higher processing rate, but most full-service restaurants end up on the Point of Sale plan at $69/month per terminal or the Build Your Own plan, which can run $110+/month per terminal once you add the features you actually need. Toast also charges for online ordering, loyalty, and other add-ons separately.
Toast's processing fees are also bundled — you cannot bring your own processor — which means you are locked into Toast's rates. For high-volume restaurants, this can be a significant hidden cost.
Clover POS
Clover, owned by Fiserv, is a flexible POS platform that works for both restaurants and retail. The hardware is attractive and the app marketplace is extensive, allowing you to add functionality through third-party apps. Clover's restaurant-specific plan includes table management, floor plan customization, and basic kitchen printing.
The downside of Clover is that it is sold through banks and ISOs, which means pricing and support quality vary significantly depending on who you buy it from. Clover hardware is also proprietary and must be purchased through an authorized reseller. Monthly software fees, processing rates, and contract terms differ widely between resellers, so it pays to read the fine print carefully.
Square for Restaurants
Square for Restaurants is a solid option for quick-service restaurants, cafes, and food trucks — particularly those already in the Square ecosystem. The free plan includes basic POS functionality, and the Plus plan adds table management, course management, and kitchen display support.
Square's flat-rate processing is straightforward but expensive for high-volume full-service restaurants. Square also lacks some of the advanced features that full-service restaurants need, such as robust tableside ordering with handheld devices and deep integration with third-party delivery platforms.
How to Choose the Right System for Your Restaurant
| System | Best For | Monthly Cost (per terminal) | Processing | Local Support |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SkyTab | Full-service, bars, multi-location | All-inclusive monthly fee | Flexible (Shift4) | Yes — UBC Unlimited |
| Toast | Mid-to-large full-service | Higher monthly cost + hardware | Toast only (bundled) | Limited in Utah |
| Clover | Flexible retail/restaurant hybrid | Varies by reseller | Varies by reseller | Varies |
| Square | QSR, cafes, food trucks | Free to moderate | Square only (flat rate) | No local support |
For most Utah restaurants — whether you are running a full-service dining room in Salt Lake City, a bar in Provo, or a multi-location chain along the Wasatch Front — SkyTab offers the best combination of features, price, and local support. As an authorized SkyTab reseller, UBC Unlimited handles installation, training, and ongoing support for Utah businesses.
